ModeratorI’ll try and set up the game for a 7:30ish kick off with the terrain and dispositions all set out. As usual there will be a short briefing on the lead up to the battle and objectives for each side. Can anyone who has suitable wagons bring them along – there is a fortified camp on the battlefield. Have a Great Christmas and hopefully see a few of you on Thursday.

ModeratorAnd that’s why Simon was a great choice for Club Secretary. I assume you have accepted?

ModeratorSimon,
The 8th is ok for me. It would be one of the great ‘what ifs’ of history if Harald won again as I doubt the Normans would have the strength to make a second attempt at conquest.Andy Dumelow
ModeratorLooks like Thursday 29th Dec is the favourite date. I’ll make sure everything is set up for a prompt start. We will need a lot of Poles: 4 units winged Hussars, 8 Dragoons, 8 light horse and 16 Pancerni/armoured Cossacks.
And quite a few western cavalry: 8 armoured pistol/pistol, 14 unarmoured pistol/pistol.
There will be at least 7 commands, but room for more if needed.Andy Dumelow
ModeratorBob,
I’m really open to any dates we can get 7 players together. There were 4 of us down last Thursday (3 playing) so it could be a push. Just glad you showed an interest so quickly.Andy Dumelow
ModeratorThe 10th is ok by me.
Andy Dumelow
ModeratorYep.
6th Oct is ok by me as well.Andy Dumelow
ModeratorYes – that’s more or less what I had envisaged handed out on a plate! I think we need players who know whatever rule system you decide on pretty well as Hardrada, Harold and William. Hardrada and Harold should also be able to commit to two games (Fulford and Stamford, Stamford and Hastings respectively). Other commands could be taken up as required and wouldn’t necessarily involve just 4 players committing to three games. I’m available from 22nd Sept to take any minor role available. I’m actually looking forward to this – I can’t believe it almost passed us by.

ModeratorAs discussed last week at the club are we ok for 1st September with Simon G, Dene, Steve and Pete?
I have all the Swedes needed.

ModeratorAs a date for this has still to be finalised I thought I’d take a look at significant events on available dates in October that might inspire players:
1899 October 30th. 2nd Boer War – ‘Mournful Monday’. Two British defeats led to the largest surrender of British troops since the Napoleonic Wars.
1904 October 22nd. Russo-Japanese War – Dogger Bank incident when the Russian Baltic fleet mistook British trawlers for Japanese warships.
1912 October 23rd. First Balkan War – Serbs defeat western Ottoman army at Kumanovo.
1914 October 12th. WWI – Start of battle of Messines, part of the Race to the Sea that largely decided the line of the Western Front.
1915 October 8th. WWI – end of Battle of Loos. The first use of gas by British forces. The failure of the British assaults led to the removal of Sir John French as commander of the BEF.
1916 October 25th WWI – French counterattacks at Verdun lead to the recapture of Fort Douaumont.
Anyone fancy the role of the British trawler fleet at Dogger Bank?

ModeratorPete has gone down with a bug and won’t be able to make tonight’s game. I’ll bring all the stuff anyway, and my Danes to sub for the Russians. If anyone has any proper Russians or green coated fellas that would suit It would be better. Any w dragoon units would also be most welcome.

ModeratorOK it now seems fixed for June 2nd with Pete, Steve, Simon G and Dene. Any probs let me know.
