Being away for a long weekend prevented me getting a history “prog-list” out. Undoubtedly this is my pick of the week:

The Somme 1916 – From Both Sides of the Wire

    BBC Two: Mon 18 July 2016, 21.00 – 22.00. 1 / 3

On the first day of the Somme alone, more than 19,000 British Empire troops lost their lives. Yet perhaps the sheer scale of the carnage even now stops us from having a clear view of what happened. In a three-part series, military historian Peter Barton reappraises events with the help of German archive documents relating to the battle. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07lst9b
